PLASTER in wet room bathroom? Build wet room shower advice
Designers, architects, builders, plumbers & tilersoften discuss building BATHROOMS with WET ROOM SHOWERS. Regularly they mention using plaster in the bathroom build.   Date: Monday 14 June, 2010

Should we use plaster in a wet room shower, or even bathrooms in general?

NO, don't do it....unless you've no alternative.!

Wetroom showers are about the floor, floor drain or waterproof tanking membrane. But, we know grout is porous, & many wet room leaks in showers are due to water seeping through walls. Hence, always waterproof shower walls, be they wet rooms or not.

Critically, plaster gets soft when wet, looses cohesion, & weakens. Plasterboard not much better.

So why plaster at all.?

We don't know a good reason, unless you want a perectly flat surface for a final finish such a paint, or wallpaper. Otherwise, wall tiles are the finish, & they hide poor substrate surfaces. All you need is something FLAT in the shower or bathroom.

With this in mind, we think regular, old fashioned PLY is often a great, cheap wall surface, that doesn't crumble if wet. As you'll waterproof it anyway, & the tiles give a great finish, don't waste money plastering in bathrooms.

NB - Tile backing boards are great in principle. BUT....tile backer boards are NOT all WATERPROOF..! Most grey hard cement based boards (you know the ones..) are NOT waterproof, but only offer stability when wet. If they allow water though, then what advantage do they offer? Nothing a bit of ply doesn't already offer.

SO, value for money waterproof advice for wet rooms. Don't buy backing boards unless they are much cheaper than alternative materials, because ALL WALLS need WATERPROOFING whatever the substrate.
